SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - He's one of South Dakota's most successful athletes.
Chad Greenway played for the Minnesota Vikings for more than a decade.
Now, in his retirement, he's turning to a very different business venture.
"It's something completely different than I've ever done," Greenway said.
Greenway has launched Gray Duck Vodka in South Dakota.
As a lifelong Vikings fan, Robert Wentz feels like this moment is a touchdown for himself and his business, Booze Boys.
"When you have the chance to have Chad Greenway come into your store, you don't pass it up," Wentz said.
Greenway kicked off his football career in Mount Vernon. His team won high school state titles twice.
After college, he played for the Minnesota Vikings for more than a decade, including in two Pro Bowls. Now Greenway is going from the Vikings to vodka.
"When my business partners came to me and brought up the idea, I thought it was a cool idea. Obviously Gray Duck is synonymous with Minnesota. The label is very Vikings with the purple," Greenway said.
"Gray Duck" refers to a famous Vikings end-zone celebration last season when they played Duck, Duck Gray Duck.
On Thursday, Greenway and his business partners launched Gray Duck Vodka in South Dakota. They held events at several locations, including Booze Boys.
"We've had such a crazy response on social media with our posts to get it to South Dakota. They say, 'We want it in our hands and our stores,'" Greenway said.
In addition to being owned by a former Vikings player, there's another Minnesota connection with Gray Duck. It's made from corn in Minnesota.
"Which really hits home for me being a farm kid and growing up in South Dakota at Mount Vernon. There's a lot of sense there," Greenway said.
Sense that Wentz thinks will score big points with customers.
"We've been getting phone calls all day long," Wentz said.
In addition to Booze Boys, Greenway and his partners also launched the vodka line at a couple of other Sioux Falls locations, including Hy-Vee and JJ's Wine, Spirits & Cigars.
